Pre-Doc Observership for Internationally-Trained Dentists

A great opportunity to enhance your CV by experiencing a US dental school live and in person!
One-week program

January 12, 2026 - January 16, 2026

Course Overview

  • One week-long program designed for Internationally trained Dentists to provide a culminating experience to further their dental education in United States.
  • This program is designed to meet the needs of prospective students who are interested in understanding the basic framework for the International Dentist Education Program.
  • Participant will receive a certificate noting their 36 hours of CE credit.
  • Please note that it is recommended that you have a minimum TOEFL score of 92.
  • Please submit your TOEFL score report to smile@uthscsa.edu, and include your full name and the user code associated with your CDE profile. Once we receive that document, we will then contact you to notify you if you are approved to attend this program.

    Course Curriculum

  • Chair-side observation in pre-doc clinics
  • Informal meeting with residents and IDEP students
  • Literature review seminar (if available or occurring at that time)
  • Clinical conference
  • Faculty development seminars with CE credit (if available or occurring at that time)
  • Rotation through Advanced Education in General Dentistry clinic

  • Schedule

  • This program is one full week, Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM
  • Every session will be designed to maximize the clinical exposure per that week
  • Attendees will spend most of their time in the pre-doc clinics observing dental students
  • Attendees will be allowed to attend seminars and faculty development seminars if they are offered during that session
  • There are opportunities to purchase breakfast, lunch, and drinks on campus. There will be a meal break for lunch, we will not be providing meals. You are welcome to bring your own lunch or enjoy our on-campus cafeteria options

  • Attire

  • This observationship occurs 100% in the clinic. Therefore, wearing scrubs is required and will not be provided
  • Closed toed clinic shoes are required - sneakers or clinic shoes acceptable. No Crocs, no sandals, no high-heels
  • Identification badges are to be worn so that the name on the badge is visible at all times

    • Poornima Mensinkai, BDS, MS, PhD
      • MensinkaiP182Dr. Poornima Mensinkai, BDS, MS, PhD, was born in Bangalore, India. She graduated with her Bachelor’s in Dental Surgery from Karnataka University, India in 2000. She graduated with her Master’s in 2011 and PhD in 2017 from Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, UT Health San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Mensinkai is currently a Full-time Clinical Assistant Professor with Department of Comprehensive Dentistry. Dr. Mensinkai completed her Teaching excellence course in 2011 and Entering mentoring in 2017. She teaches Dental Anatomy to freshmen and Operative Dentistry to sophomores. She is passionate about training International dentists aspiring to make a career in the US and is the Director for Hand Skill CE course at Smile UTHSCSA. Dr. Mensinkai is on the admission committee for DDS and International Dentist Education Program. She serves on dental education outreach committee and DECO Task force for Screening.     • Ahmed I. Sabbah, DDS, PhD
      • SabbahA170Dr. Sabbah is a Clinical Associate Professor and Program Director of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program (AEGD) at The University of Texas Health San Antonio School of Dentistry. He completed his DDS, PhD and 2 AEGD certificate at UTHSA in 2015. Dr. Sabbah received The University of Texas Kenneth I. Shine M.D., Award for innovation and the UT Health President’s Translational and Entrepreneurial Research Award for his invention of a web application used for clinical assessment of dental students. Dr. Sabbah has won several awards including: “Professor of The Year” in 2019, 2020 and 2022 and the “Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award” in 2018. Dr. Sabbah clinical expertise focuses on interdisciplinary treatment planning, digital workflow and clinical implementation for full mouth rehabilitation, On X and smile design. Dr. Sabbah has published several articles and has recently authored chapter I of the new “Smile Design” book. He has focused his current research on the use of digital software for smile analysis and 3D printing. Dr. Sabbah has been a PI on several grants has presented at numerous national and international meetings. Dr. Sabbah is a member of OKU honor society San Antonio Chapter and a member of ITI and AGD.     • Narayanan Sreenivasan, BDS, DDS, MDS
      • SreenivasanN257Dr. Sreenivasan Narayanan assumed the role of Director for the Pre-doctoral Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program and holds the position of Associate Clinical Professor within the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He joined The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio faculty in September 2023.

        In the past 25 years, Dr. Narayanan has committed a substantial part of his professional life to full-time teaching as a faculty member at dental Schools worldwide, spanning across notable universities such as “The University of Hong Kong” in Hong Kong, “King Saud University” in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, “Case Western Reserve University” in Cleveland, Ohio, “University of Detroit Mercy” in Detroit,  Michigan, and the “University of Missouri - Kansas City” in Kansas City, Missouri.

        Dr. Narayanan has been actively involved in the design and advancement of innovative teaching approaches within the predoctoral oral and Maxillofacial Surgery curriculum at various dental schools across the United States. He has introduced several innovative methodologies, including simulation-based learning and video-based learning, aimed at equipping the predoctoral dental students with essential skills necessary for clinical practice.
