Treating the Pregnant Dental Patient

Course overview

Pregnant and lactating dental patients are seen quite frequently in the dental office. As more physicians are becoming aware of the oral-systemic relationships, more women are being referred to the dentist during pregnancy for treatment. This presentation provides a review of the proper and safe management of these patients.


Objectives

  • Summarize the physiologic changes associated with pregnancy
  • Summarize changes in the oral cavity associated with pregnancy
  • Understand the safe dental management of pregnant and lactating patient
  • Summarize FDA Pregnancy Classification of drugs used in dentistry

      • BARBARA MACNEILL, MS, DMD, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry and completed her two-year General Practice Residency at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She is an Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Director of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program.
