Application of Pit and Fissure Sealants for Dental Assistants

Combination Webinar Lecture and Hands-On Clinic Session

June 7, 2022 - June 11, 2022

Master Pit & Fissure Sealants!

This program will provide a total of 8 hours of instruction and application of Pit and Fissure sealants.

The lecture will be provided in:

  • 2 (two) 1/2 hour live, interactive webinars, plus…
  • 3 hours of hands-on or clinical information will be provided in our clinic on patient simulators.
    (This is intended to provide this educational program in a safe environment without patient participation).
    Participants will be provided with information, guidance and materials necessary to place pit and fissure sealants in multiple scenarios.
    Participants DO NOT need to provide a patient for this course. Clinical applications will be made on simulated patients in a clinical setting.

    COURSE SCHEDULE: to be delivered in the following format:

  • Webinar SESSION 1: Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
  • Webinar SESSION 2: Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
  • HANDS-ON SESSION: Saturday. June 11, 2022 at 1pm - 4pm at UT Health School of Dentistry, 8210 Floyd Curl Dr San Antonio, TX 78229

  • Objectives

    Course of instruction will include:

  • Current methods and practices in Infection Control
  • Overview of patient management and management of medical emergencies
  • Anatomy as it relates to the application of Dental sealants
  • Legal and ethical concerns related to the application of sealants


  • The laboratory and clinical portions of the course will provide the participant with:

  • Patient Education
  • Patient Positioning and Ergonomics for the procedure
  • Optimal material and equipment setup
  • Placement of at least eight (8) pit and fissure sealants and topical fluoride on a dental patient simulator


  • The webinar will be provided on a platform that can be viewed on either a desktop or laptop computer as well as a tablet.

    This will be a “live and interactive” Webinar - Q&A and chat will be available.

    • Virginia G. Carrillo, BSDH, MEd
      • CarrilloV108VIRGINIA G. CARRILLO, BSDH, M.Ed., is an Assistant Professor/Clinical in the Department of Periodontics, Dental Hygiene Division at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene in 2004 and earned her Master’s in in Educational Leadership from Concordia University, Portland, Oregon 2014. For the past 8 1/2 years she has taught undergraduate levels in didactics and clinical settings in the dental hygiene program. Her experience includes general and periodontal private practice. Virginia’s interest is in Periodontics in which she has the pleasure of teaching Periodontics and Advanced Periodontics to the undergraduate students, and Advanced Periodontics to the bachelor’s completion students. She finds teaching a rewarding profession and always shows her passion to the students on being the best in all they do and to become lifelong learners.
    • Emelda E. Hernandez, RDH, MS
      • Emelda E. Hernandez Trevino is an assistant professor/clinical in the Department of Periodontics, Dental Hygiene Division at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene in 2003 and her Master of Science in 2013, both from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. For the past twenty years she has taught undergraduate levels in didactics and clinical settings in the dental hygiene program. During these years she has dedicated her life to educating and advocating oral health with her students and patients in faculty private practice. Her eclectic experience includes work for a general and periodontal private practice, dental hygiene teaching, research, CE speaking, and publishing articles as a Master’s thesis chair. She has a centered interest in Motivational Interviewing, with focus on utilizing it as a means of encouraging change in patients’ behaviors through communication with dental hygiene students.
