Behavior Management Techniques and Protective Stabilization in Pediatric Dentistry-WEBINAR

Course Overview

This course will satisfy the Texas State Board Dental Examiners adopted new rule 108.14 regarding pediatric stabilization. The new rule requires that a dentist who wishes to utilize pediatric stabilization obtain advanced training by either an accredited post-doctoral program or pediatric dentistry residency program that provides clinical and didactic education in advanced behavior management techniques or an extensive and focused continuing education course of no less than 8 hours in advanced behavior management that includes both didactic and clinical education pertaining to Protective Stabilization.


Objectives

  • Scientific evidence will be discussed for indications and application of commonly used behavior guidance techniques
  • Review the objectives, indications, contraindications and precautions for the various modalities of protective stabilization
  • Gain an understanding for the application of basic and advanced behavior guidance modalities in the context of today’s parental and societal expectations and limitations
  • This lecture will also include a hands-on demonstration of the proper use of stabilization devices

    • Maria-Jose Cervantes, DDS, MS
      • MARIA-JOSE CERVANTES MENDEZ, DDS, MS, obtained her dental degree from Intercontinental University at Mexico City. After working as a general practitioner for a couple of years she continued her training at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio where she completed her Residency in Pediatric Dentistry. She continued her education and received her Masters Degree in Orthodontics at the Intercontinental University.

        Dr. Cervantes has been in private practice specialized in Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics since 2001 in Mexico City and worked as part time faculty at Universidad Intercontinental for the undergraduate students in the Pedo and Orto until March of this year when she joined the faculty at UTHSCSA in the Pediatric Dentistry Department. She is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association and Certified by the Mexican Board of Pediatric Dentistry.     • Claudia I. Contreras, DDS
      • Dr. Claudia Isabel Contreras, DDS is Professor, Department of Developmental Dentistry/ Pediatric Dentistry since 2005 and is the Pre-Doctoral Director of Pediatric Dentistry at University of Texas Health School of Dentistry San Antonio since 2016. She earned her dental degree at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. She continued her education and completed her pediatric dental residency at the University of Puerto Rico in 2004 and then completed a fellowship at The Children’s Hospital of Dentistry in 2005. She was co-investigator of clinical trials in which NuSmile zirconia crowns were evaluated and findings at 24 months and 36 months were published, with the most recent publication in the American Journal of Dentistry June 2020. She is co-author/contributor in the textbook Clinical Cases in Pediatric Dentistry published June 2012. She also volunteers as a Clinical Director with Special Olympics of Texas Healthy Smiles since 2016. You may contact this author at contrerasc2@uthscsa.edu
