The success story of increasing life expectancy, as witnessed in the 20th century, along with the aging “baby boomers” has resulted in an unprecedented rate of growth in the number of older adults. With this growing population, health care providers have been challenged to manage patients with multiple chronic medical problems, multiple medications, functional limitations as well as cognitive and affective deficits. These trends have heralded healthcare's challenge for the 21st century, which is to improve oral health as well as quality of life for this growing population.
This session will identify some of the medical, functional and cognitive challenges that many of the more prevalent chronic medical conditions impose on our adult dental patients. Through a multi-dimensional dental assessment model, dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants will have an opportunity to learn about some of the different aspects and challenges confronting the dental team providing oral health care to medically challenged adult patients.
