Course Overview

This course addresses the critical intersection of dentistry and the opioid epidemic in the United States. Designed for dental professionals, the session explores the scope of opioid misuse nationwide, identifies the factors contributing to the opioid epidemic and highlights opioid-related prescribing practices specific to Dentistry. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of their professional responsibilities in opioid stewardship, learn strategies to identify risk factors for opioid misuse among dental patients and explore safer, evidence-based approaches to pain management. Through case scenarios, attendees will be better prepared to make informed, ethical decisions in clinical practice.

  • Understand the scope of the opioid epidemic in the United States
  • Identify opioid-related prescribing practices in Dentistry
  • Recognize the impact of the opioid crisis on dental practice

      • MarwahaR231Diplomate American Board of Dental Public Health (ABDPH)
Assistant Director, Dental Public Health Residency Program
Associate Professor/Clinical, Department of Comprehensive Dentistry

Dr. Marwaha is a driving force in the national conversation on opioid stewardship in dentistry and a champion of medical-dental collaboration. A Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, she blends clinical expertise, academic leadership, and public health strategy to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing healthcare today.

At the heart of her work lies a deep commitment to addressing the opioid epidemic through the lens of Dentistry. Dr. Marwaha leads innovative initiatives that train dental professionals especially to recognize their critical role in pain management, safe prescribing practices, and early intervention for substance use disorders. She has developed cutting-edge interprofessional education (IPE) programs that bring together dental, medical, and allied healthcare professionals to foster a unified approach to responsible opioid prescribing and patient-centered care.

Dr. Marwaha’s courses and workshops are known for their practical insights and real-world impact. Her sessions in especially role of dentists in combatting the U.S. opioid epidemic, opioid prescribing in dentistry and non-opioid alternatives to managing acute dental pain, equip dental providers with the tools to make evidence-based decisions that reduce opioid misuse while ensuring compassionate care.

Through her leadership, Dr. Marwaha has secured significant federal and state funding to improve access to oral health care, enhance the dental workforce, and implement community-based models that integrate medical and dental education and services, especially in South Texas’ most vulnerable populations. A sought-after speaker at national conferences, she also serves as a peer reviewer for high-impact journals and remains deeply engaged in professional organizations shaping the future of oral health.

If you're looking to understand how dentistry can lead in the fight against opioid misuse and how interprofessional education can transform patient care, Dr. Marwaha’s work offers both inspiration and actionable strategies.
