Responsible Dental Prescriber - Analgesic Prescribing Part 2: Beyond the Basics

Description

This course is intended to satisfy SBDE rules 111.1 and 104.1 as of this date. This portion of the course will emphasize risks associated with analgesics that are often underappreciated.  Understanding these risks will allow the practitioner to better select from all the tools in the analgesic toolbox to provide maximum pain control with minimum risk. Practice situations will be used to illustrate the points raised in the discussion.


Objectives

After completing the course, the participant will:

  • Understand how and when NSAIDs increase the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction
  • Understand how and when NSAIDs increase the risk of renal failure
  • Understand how and when NSAIDs increase the risk of liver failure
  • Understand how and when NSAIDs increase the risk of gut complications

  • Presenter(s)

    • Ernest B. Luce, DDS
      • ERNEST B. LUCE, DDS, received his DDS degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 1985. In June of 1986, he completed a one year General Practice Residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Upon completion of the residency, Dr. Luce joined the Department of General Dentistry at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Currently he is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Health Science Center, and he also maintains a part time private practice in general dentistry in San Antonio.

        His teaching duties include didactic presentations as well as clinical supervision of graduate general dentistry residents. Dr. Luce served as Head of the Graduate Division of the Department of General Dentistry and Program Director for the General Practice Residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from 1993 to 1999. He also served as the Department Chairman for the Department of Hospital Dentistry, University Hospital, in San Antonio during that same time period. You may contact this author at luce@uthscsa.edu

    Zoom Webinar Attendance Policy: Attendance Requirements

    Participants are required to maintain continuous attendance throughout the entire webinar session to receive continuing education (CE) credits. Please note the following attendance policies:

  • Attendance Verification Requirement: Please register for and sign into the Zoom call with your first and last name, or the first and last name of the attendee who is to receive credit for this course. 
  • Full Attendance Required: You must remain connected to the webinar for the entire duration of the session. Partial CE credits will not be issued under any circumstances. Please join the call in a timely manner, as those who miss 15 minutes or more of any portion of the webinar course times will not be eligible to receive CE credits.
  • Disconnection Protocol: If you are disconnected from the webinar for any reason, you must make immediate and persistent efforts to reconnect to the session.
  • Waiting Room Protocol: When in the waiting room, please remain there until you are admitted by the host. Do not exit the waiting room or attempt to rejoin through a different method unless instructed to do so.
  • Credit Eligibility: Continuing Education credits will not be issued to participants who fail to maintain attendance for the full duration of the webinar, regardless of the reason for disconnection or early departure.
