Important Course Information

This is a hybrid course. This means that you have the option to choose to attend this course either in person (and on campus) or via live interactive webinar hosted on Zoom. During registration, carefully select your choice of attendance method (in person or via webinar). Once you register for the in-person option, you may not change your registration to webinar.

  • The September 13-14, 2025 sessions are eligible for either in-person or webinar attendance
  • The September 20-21, 2025 sessions are NOT eligible for webinar attendance. These sessions are in person only.


  • Overview
    Are you a dentist, dental practice owner, or dental hygienist looking to enhance your, or your team’s, clinical expertise? Look no further! Our comprehensive Local Infiltration Anesthesia Certification Course is designed just for you.

    Didactic Portion
    A 20-hour program designed to meet the didactic continuing education requirements for Texas-licensed dental hygienists who seek certification for the administration of local infiltration anesthesia delegated to them by a licensed Texas dentist, in accordance with TSBDE Rule 115.10.

    Hands-On Portion
    The second segment of the local infiltration course provides 12 hours of clinical, practical, and hands-on continuing education experience related to local infiltration of anesthetics. During this experience, each participant will practice injection techniques in a simulation setting prior to providing local infiltration anesthetic on patient-partners. This will give each student valuable insight and experience as a clinician and as a patient.

    Didactic Portion Objectives

    This program is designed to meet the didactic continuing education requirements for Texas-licensed dental hygienists who seek certification for the administration of local infiltration anesthesia delegated to them by a licensed Texas dentist, in accordance with TSBDE Rule 115.10.

    The didactic course will cover the following topics, in concordance with TSBDE Rule 115.10:

  • Texas State Board of Dental Examiners laws and regulations
  • Physiology and neurophysiology
  • Head, neck, and oral anatomy
  • Adult respiratory and circulatory physiology and related anatomy
  • Emergency procedures
  • Recognition and management of local complications
  • Recognition and management of systemic toxicity
  • Pharmacology of agents used in local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors
  • Indications and contraindications for use of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors
  • Selection and preparation of the armamentarium and record keeping
  • Safety and infection control procedures and disposal of sharps
  • Postoperative care and instructions to patients

  • Additional topics will include coordination of pain control within the dental team, case scenarios, calculations of dosages of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors for specific patients, scientific evidence for local anesthetic efficacy, and adjuncts to local anesthetic techniques. 

    Hands-On Portion Objectives

  • Describe anatomic landmarks and related neuroanatomy related to dental local anesthetic injections
  • Demonstrate correct handling of the local anesthetic armamentarium, and correct operator, syringe and patient positioning for infiltration anesthesia of all four quadrants of the mouth
  • Correctly obtain informed consent and demonstrate actual local anesthetic infiltration injections in all four quadrants of the mouth, as well as correct chart entries for recording local anesthetic injections

    • Nikole Kramer
      • Nikole Kramer graduated from the University of Dallas with degrees in Biology and Philosophy before earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She is currently an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery intern at UT Health San Antonio. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Nikole brings a strong foundation in both science and the humanities to her clinical training and patient care. You may contact this author at kramern@uthscsa.edu
    • Carlos Landaeta Quinones, DDS
      • CARLOS LANDAETA QUINONES, DDS, is an assistant professor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, School of Dentistry. Dr. Landaeta was born in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela. In 2002, he obtained his dental degree from the GMA University at Barcelona, Venezuela. In 2006, he was accepted to do his residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia. You may contact this author at landaeta@uthscsa.edu
    • Narayanan Sreenivasan, BDS, DDS, MDS
      • SreenivasanN257Dr. Sreenivasan Narayanan assumed the role of Director for the Pre-doctoral Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program and holds the position of Associate Clinical Professor within the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He joined The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio faculty in September 2023.

        In the past 25 years, Dr. Narayanan has committed a substantial part of his professional life to full-time teaching as a faculty member at dental Schools worldwide, spanning across notable universities such as “The University of Hong Kong” in Hong Kong, “King Saud University” in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, “Case Western Reserve University” in Cleveland, Ohio, “University of Detroit Mercy” in Detroit,  Michigan, and the “University of Missouri - Kansas City” in Kansas City, Missouri.

        Dr. Narayanan has been actively involved in the design and advancement of innovative teaching approaches within the predoctoral oral and Maxillofacial Surgery curriculum at various dental schools across the United States. He has introduced several innovative methodologies, including simulation-based learning and video-based learning, aimed at equipping the predoctoral dental students with essential skills necessary for clinical practice.     • Brenda Wertman, RDH, MPH
      • Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Professor Brenda Wertman brings almost 35 years of experience in the dental field, with nearly half of her career as an Expanded Functions Dental Hygienist. She holds dual AAS degrees in Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting from community colleges in Washington state, a BS in Environmental and Occupational Health from the University of Washington with a concentration in medical toxicology and epidemiology, and an MPH in Dental Public Health from A.T. Still University with an emphasis on education. Always eager to keep learning, she recently earned her EMT-Basic certificate from UT Health San Antonio along with her BLS Instructor certification through the American Heart Association. Passionate about dentistry, education, and helping others, she is a proud member of the National, State, and Local Dental Hygiene Associations. Professor Wertman has taught Local Anesthetic courses for dental hygienists in Washington, Georgia, and now Texas.

    Guidelines: All participants are expected to respect this policy at all times.
