OSHA and Infection Control Update

OVERVIEW
Infections present a significant hazard in the dental environment. Although protection of the patient is an obvious priority, oral healthcare personnel are also vulnerable to exposure. The intent of this course is to set forth an Infection Control/Exposure Control Protocol to minimize the transmission of infections in the clinical process (for the protection of patients and oral health care personnel alike) via direct contact with blood, saliva, and other secretions; via indirect contact with contaminated instruments, operatory equipment, and environmental surfaces; and via airborne contaminant's, such as droplet spatter and aerosols of infectious body fluids.
OBJECTIVES
Participants in this course will be introduced to evidence-based information that will facilitate compliance with 29 CFR Part 1910.1030, Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens, Final Rule (Federal Register 56(235): 64004-182, 1991 and the implementation of recommendations made by other federal, state, and local agencies and professional organizations.
In addition to fulfilling your annual OSHA requirements upon completion of this course, oral healthcare personnel should be able to:
• Understand the rational for the need for an Infection Control/Exposure Control Protocol.
• Develop and implement an practical Infection Control/Exposure Control Protocol appropriate for a particular oral healthcare setting, which include the following essential elements:
• Education and training; Standard precautions Vaccinations
• Personal protective equipment; Work practice and engineering controls
• Environmental infection control; Post exposure evaluation and follow-up
• Medical records; Medical conditions and work restrictions
PRESENTER
GEZA T. TEREZHALMY, D.D.S., M.A., received his D.D.S. degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1971, continuing with his postgraduate training from 1975 to 1977 and obtaining a Certificate in Oral Medicine from the National Naval Dental Center. In 1987, he obtained his M.A. degree in Higher Education and Human Deveopment from The George Washington University. Dr. Terezhalmy is certified by the American Board of Oral Medicine and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.
Dr. Terezhalmy is Professor and Head of the Division of Oral Medicine in the Department of Dental Diagnostic Science with a cross appointment in the Department of Pharmacology in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In addition, he is an Adjunct Professor of Oral Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry; a Consultant in Oral Medicine/Pharmacology at the Naval Dental School, National Naval Dental Center; and a Consultant in Oral Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is also a Visiting Professor at the Facultad de Odontologia at the Universidad Mariano Galvez de Guatemala in Guatemala, Guatemala.
Prior to joining the Health Science Center in 1998, Dr. Terezhalmy served as Dean at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio from 1990 to 1992 and Acting Dean from 1989 to 1990. During this time, he also was Chairman and Director of the Graduate Program in Oral Medicine in the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology at the University. In addition, he has served in various capacities in the United States Navy from 1971 to his current position as a Consultant. In 1980 to 1984, he was the Chairman and Director of the Graduate Program in the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology, Naval Dental School and from 1982 to 1984, Courtesy Clinical Staff in Dental Service, Naval Hospital at the Naval Medical Command,National Capital Region, Bethesda, Maryland.
A prolific writer, Dr. Terezhalmy has co-authored a textbook, Practical Infection Control in Dentistry, 2004 and contributed the chapter,” Dental Care of AD Patients” to the textbook, Azheimer ‘s Disease: A Physician’s Guide to Practical Management., 2003. Dr. Terezhalmy is the Section Editor of Oral Medicine/Diagnostics/Therapeutics with Quintessence International and has served as editor or contributing editor for several publications, co-authored or contributed chapters for several books and has had over 100 papers and abstracts published.
His research activities have included many privately and publicly funded clinical studies which have focused on infection control, pain management, and special patient care. Dr. Terezhalmy has accepted invitations to lecture before many local, state, national, and international societies.
Dr. Terezhalmy has many professional affiliations and over the past twenty five years, he has held more than thirty positions in professional organizations. He has served on the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Oral Medicine since 1987 and has held numerous leadership positions including President of the Organization of Teachers of Oral Diagnosis, 1989-1990 and President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine, 1986-1987.
Among his numerous honors and awards, he was the recipient of the 2003 Presidential Award for Clinical Excellence from The University of Texas Health Science Center and delivered the 2003 Diplomates’ Lecture for the American Academy of Oral Medicine. He holds Fellowship status with the Academy of Dentistry International, Pierre Fauchard Academy, American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists,
