Making Implants Successful for the Dental Team

DENTAL HYGIENE OVERVIEW
Successfully incorporating dental implants requires a coordinated effort from all team members in the office. This course will provide a review of the critical roles all dental assistants and hygienists play in developing an implant practice. Evaluation, case presentation, clinical procedures, and hygiene maintenance of the implant patient will be illustrated by Stephanie Strong, dental hygienist and office manager for a nationally known implant private practice. Proven methods for growing the implant practice will be shown by Ms. Strong, who has worked in all aspects of the dental office.

DENTAL HYGIENE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, the clinical dental hygienist will be able to:
• Train all dental team members to discuss dental implants with prospective patients.
• Develop methods for restorative and surgical practices to work seamlessly in planning the implant case.
• Review the typical implant components used to complete an implant case.
• Illustrate hygiene maintenance principles, products, and procedures for both in- office appointments and home care with implant patients.

DENTAL ASSISTING OVERVIEW
This easy and fun course along with hands on applications will be designed for the clinical dental assistant. Information obtained during this course on implant therapy will consist of informative topics, such as implant case presentation, implant treatment coordinating, along with treatment planning for surgical and restorative options.

DENTAL ASSISTING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, the clinical dental assistant will be able to:
• Successfully present an implant case presentation to patients.
• Implant treatment coordinating.
• Surgical and restorative options.

Stephanie S. Strong, R.D.H., B.S., graduated from Caruth School of Dental Hygiene at the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1972. She is a dental hygienist in Dr. Samuel Strong’s general practice in Little Rock, Arkansas which maintains an emphasis on cosmetic dentistry and dental implants. In addition, she is the office manager for the dental practice as well as the seminar coordinator for Dr. Strong.

Her expertise extends beyond dental hygiene maintenance, as she has developed working systems for application in all areas of managing the restorative dental practice. With such clinical and administrative experiences, she has co-developed the presentation, “Building a Strong Implant Team” which she presents with Dr. Strong.

Ms. Strong has been a leader in local and state hygiene societies, serving as Editor of the Arkansas State Dental Hygiene Association Newsletter, President of the Arkansas State Dental Hygiene Association, and Continuing Education Chair of the Arkansas State Dental Hygiene Association. She has also published the article, “Hygiene Maintenance for the Dental Implant Patient,” for the Journal of Practical Dental Hygiene.

Vicki L. Garza, C.D.A., R.D.A., obtained her CDA certificate from the Texas State Technical College in Waco, Texas on November 14, 1989, from the Dental Assistant Program. She resides and works in Austin, Texas. She proudly works with an oral surgery practice, Lone Star Oral & Maxiofacial Surgery, with Dr.’s Ron Horne, Matthew Gordon, and Michael Shedlosky, since 2005. Vicki is the practices’ surgery team supervisor and the implant treatment coordinator.

Vicki then pursued her career in oral surgery in December 1990 to present. She has developed a wide range of experience within oral surgery from simple extractions to total facial reconstruction, and her most passionate dental implantology. Vicki has over 15 years experience in oral surgery, she has helped surgeon’s open and set-up clinical practices. Along with training assistants, she enjoys coaching and educating dental teams and patients.

Vicki has continued to further her education in the dental and healthcare field. To name a few accomplishments, she has successfully completed the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation; she received her Radiology Certificate in 1989, Nitrous Oxide Certification in 1992, and an Advanced IV Therapy in 2000.

When Vicki is not working with Dr. Horne’s’ dental team; she enjoys being with her family, snow and water skiing, camping and riding motorcycles.
