Lecture/Participation Course for Dental Hygienists
On the Cutting Edge:Effective Instrument Sharpening

Lynn A. Smiley R.D.H., B.A.

This course is built for all practitioners that want to learn how to effectively sharpen scaling instruments for use in clinical practice. Despite the many gadgets that have come out over the years to assist with instrument sharpening most clinicians still rely on their trusty hand stones to accomplish the task. This course focuses on sharpening utilizing hand stones and will emphasize maintaining the integrity of instruments during sharpening that will increase the longevity of your instruments clinical use. We will also review infection control and personal protective equipment protocol that should be in place for instrument sharpening. This hands-on workshop will allow participants to participate in presenter guided practice with instrument sharpening.

At the end of this course, attendees/participants will be able to:
• Properly identify characteristics of universal/area specific scaling instrument design.
• Identify when instruments require sharpening.
• Understand the benefits of maintaining instrument sharpness and the risks of working with dull instruments.
• Identify common sharpening errors and how to avoid them
• List infection control and personal protective equipment needed for instrument sharpening.
• Successfully sharpen scaling instruments while maintaining the integrity of the instruments design.
