OVERVIEW
This course is designed to give dentists an intensive and comprehensive, hands-on experience in implant dentistry. The program will be held in Carlsbad, California at the new state-of-the-art Zimmer Institute.

The institute is all about training with its sophisticated labs, audiovisual equipment and lecture facilities with advanced and realistic patient treatment mannequins. Participants are encouraged to bring models and x-rays of cases that they would like reviewed during a treatment planning session.

OBJECTIVES
• Develop treatment planning skills, rationale, and scientific basis for the clinical practice of simple and complex implant cases.
• Become adept at implant placement and soft tissue handling.
• Gain experience with the latest implant surgery and prosthetic implant instrumentation.
• Gain surgical knowledge and hands-on training in immediate load, extraction and immediate implant placement, socket preservation techniques, block grafts, sinus lifting, cancellous grafting and membrane techniques.
• Learn and perform prosthodontic procedures on advanced mannequin models with single unit, multiple unit, and edentulous scenarios in a hands-on environment.

PRESENTERS
COL (RET) WENDELL A. EDGIN, D.D.S., F.A.G.D.
, obtained his DDS degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 1980 and completed his General Practice residency at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona in 1981. Dr. Edgin completed his residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1990 at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Currently, Dr. Edgin is in private practice limited to oral and maxillofacial surgery in San Antonio, Texas. He was an Associate Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dental School from July 2001 to November 1, 2006.

Prior to his position at the Dental School, Dr. Edgin served as the Department Chairman and Director of the Graduate Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program at Wilford Hall United States Air Force Medical Center. In addition, he also served as the Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to the Surgeon General. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal with one device.

Dr. Edgin has written and lectured extensively on a wide range of oral and maxillofacial surgery topics. He is a Diplomate of The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. He also serves on the examination committee of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

BRIAN L. MEALEY, D.D.S., M.S., received his dental degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dental School in 1983. He attained his specialty certificate in Periodontics from Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base in 1990 and a Master of Science in Periodontics from The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Currently, Dr. Mealey is the Graduate Program Director in the Department of Periodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

In addition to his position at the Health Science Center, he is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at Baylor College of Dentistry, Texas A&M University Health System. He is the former Chairman of the Department of Periodontics and Graduate Program Director of the U.S. Air Force Periodontics Residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Mealey is a Director of the American Board of Periodontology. He has published over 70 articles, abstracts, and textbook chapter. In addition, he is the co-editor and author of 2 textbooks: Periodontal Medicine, published in 2000, and Periodontics: Medicine, Surgery, and Implants, published in 2004.

Dr. Mealey has won several awards for research, including the Balint Orban Memorial Research Award from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the F. Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award, presented by the AAP for work related to bone regeneration and dental implants. He has also received the Fellowship Award from the AAP for distinguished service. Dr. Mealey has served the AAP on many committees and on the Board of Trustees. He is also a Consultant to the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs.

ALFONSO MONARRRES, DDS, MS., received his DDS degree from The UAC in Torreon, Mexico. He then completed a three-year post-doctoral program in Prosthodontics, a one year Fellowship in Implant Dentistry and earned a Master of Science degree in Biomaterials at the School of Dental Medicine of the State Universty of New York at Buffalo ( UB ).

Dr. Monarres was a Clinical Instructor in Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics at UB School of Dental Medicine . He is a Clinical
Associate Professor of the department of Prosthodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dental School and maintains a private practice limited to Implant, Esthetic and Prosthetic Dentistry.

He is a member of multiple professional organizations including the American College of Prosthodontics, Academy of Osseointegration, American Prosthodontic Society, American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics, International Congress of Oral Implantologists, Asociacion Dental Mexicana, Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas de la Laguna, American Dental Association and The Texas Dental Association. Dr. Monarres is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and former President of the Texas Section of the American College of Prosthodontists. He has lectured in the United States and Mexico on topics related to different aspects of Implant Dentistry and Prosthodontics.

IVY S. SCHWARTZ, D.D.S., M.S.Ed., earned her DDS degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1982. She received a certificate in Prosthodontics in 1984 and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics.

Dr. Schwartz is familiar with a wide variety of implant restorations as well as surgical aspects of implant dentistry. She has been involved with the undergraduate implant lecture and clinical programs at the UTHSCSA dental school since 1995. She has presented numerous CE courses and national level presentations. In 2004 she designed and implemented the undergraduate implant program at UNLV.

Currently she is a Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She is Course Director for the General Dentistry Senior Clinic Program and maintains a part-time private practice.
