Luncheons for Learning
Soft Tissue Risk Assessment in Esthetic Restorative and Implant Dentistry
Eduardo R. Lorenzana, D.D.S., M.A.
FORMAT
One day a month a speaker discusses a dental topic during lunch. The sessions are informal and the group has an opportunity to interact with the speaker during the short discussion period at the end of the lecture. It requires only about one and one-half hour of your time to learn the latest developments in many areas of dentistry. It also offers the opportunity to become better acquainted with your colleagues and their staff since all dental allied personnel and technicians are also invited to attend.
OVERVIEW
Thorough diagnosis of the esthetic requirements and ramifications of restorative and implant dentistry in the esthetic zone requires a standardized, methodical approach. Examination of the periodontal and peri-implant tissues is an essential component of this approach, since overall gingival display, soft tissue position and volume, and papilla quantity and quality can exert significant influence on overall implant position as well as the overall esthetic outcome. This course aims to present a method utilized in daily clinical practice to consistently evaluate and document a patient’s esthetic requirements. Smile analysis and smile design principles are utilized to identify relationships between a patient's face, smile, periodontium, and natural dentition in preparation for any perio-restorative or implant-supported reconstruction where esthetics is a priority. Periodontal plastic surgery concepts and techniques that may have intimate and/or complementary effects on the proposed restorative
treatment plan are presented in an effort to shed light on the demands that each patient's smile and soft tissue characteristics exert on overall esthetics.
OBJECTIVES
• Presentation of a recently published clinical form intended for clinical evaluation of overall esthetic risk, focusing on soft tissue esthetics
• Smile analysis and its effect on perio-restorative rehabilitation including implant position and restoration.
• Application of periodontal/oral plastic surgery concepts and techniques to restorative and implant esthetics including:
• Immediate implant placement/loading
• Crown lengthening for esthetics
• Soft tissue augmentation
• Detailed case presentations documenting the steps and interactions of the surgical and restorative team
