Demographic trends clearly demonstrate that as the average life-expectancy continues to grow in America, so does the burden of chronic illness. Thus, the contemporary dental practitioner is encountering an ever-increasing number of patients with a multitude of medical conditions and associated oral lesions which affect both the patient’s oral health and management. In addition, many dental patients see their dentist more regularly and frequently than they do their primary medical manager. This places the dental practitioner in the unique position of often being the first to observe the signs and symptoms of a serious systemic condition.
This course will provide a review of some of the common medical conditions and associated oral lesions the dental practitioner is likely to encounter in his or her practice. In addition, the historical and clinical clues of commonly encountered undiagnosed systemic conditions will be provided.
