Behavior Management Techniques and Protective Stabilization in Pediatric Dentistry

OVERVIEW
This course will satisfy the Texas Sate Board Dental Examiners adopted new rule 108.14 regarding
pediatric stabilization. The new rule requires that a dentist who wishes to utilize pediatric stabilization
obtain advanced training by either an accredited post-doctoral program or pediatric dentistry residency program that provides clinical and didactic education in advanced behavior management techniques or an extensive and focused continuing education course of no less than 8 hours in advanced behavior management that includes both didactic and clinical education pertaining to Protective Stabilization.

OBJECTIVES
• Scientific evidence will be discussed for indications and application of commonly used behavior guidance techniques
• Review the objectives, indications, contraindications and precautions for the various modalities of protective stabilization
• Gain an understanding for the application of basic and advanced behavior guidance modalities in the context of today’s parental and societal expectations and limitations
• This lecture will also include a hands-on demonstration of the proper use of stabilization devices

PRESENTERS
CLAUDIA I. CONTRERAS, D.D.S., received her D.D.S. degree from the National University of Mexico City, Mexico City, Mexico in 1993. She continued with her postgraduate training as a Preceptor in Pediatric Dentistry at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1999. This was followed by an Internship in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico where she attained her Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in June, 2004. Subsequently, Dr. Contreras completed her training as a Fellow in June, 2005 at The Children’s Hospital & University of Colorado Health Science Center in Denver, Colorado. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

MARIA-JOSE CERVANTES MENDEZ D.D.S., M.S., obtained her dental degree from Intercontinental University at Mexico City. After working as a general practitioner for a couple of years she continued her training at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio where she completed her Residency in Pediatric Dentistry. She continued her education and received her Masters Degree in Orthodontics at the Intercontinental University.

Dr. Cervantes has been in private practice specialized in Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics since 2001 in Mexico City and worked as part time faculty at Universidad Intercontinental for the undergraduate students in the Pedo and Orto until March of this year when she joined the faculty at UTHSCSA in the Pediatric Dentistry Department. She is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association and Certified by the Mexican Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
