New Challenges in Risk Management and Record Keeping

OVERVIEW
Effective September 1, 2008 Rule 104.1, licensees may choose to have up to four (4) hours of risk management-related coursework (includes risk management, record keeping, and/or ethics courses and the allowance for self-study hours has been increased to (6) hours. This course will include an in-depth discussion of actual lawsuit cases and compliance requirements for your charts. This NEW course is approved by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners for technical and/or scientific course credits and can be used toward relicensure.

OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of the course, participants will learn:
• Learn and take home, the WHY and HOW of legal and ethical compliance of your office documents and records
• Jurisprudence and ethics review
• Types of lawsuits affecting the practice of dentistry
• Potential sources of all dental lawsuits
• What are the odds of being sued, and are they increasing
• New challenges increasing the risk of being sued
• What to do if you are sued
• Texas Sate Board disciplinary actions
• What to do if you are charged with rule violations
• Keeping digital and hard copy records that meet TSBDE compliance requirements and provide malpractice defense
• What the future holds

PRESENTERS
Robert M. Anderton, D.D.S., JD, LLM, received dental degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1961 and JD degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law. A practicing Dentist and Attorney, he is a Past President of the American Dental Association and a Fellow of the AGD, ACLM, ICD, and ACD.

James W. Orr, D.D.S., obtained his dental degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Dental Branch in 1968. He served on the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, the Texas State Board of Radiation Control and as Director of the NHIC Texas Medicaid Program. He is a Fellow of the ACD, AGD, ICD and ADI.
