In Lecture #1 of Dr. Jeff Burgess’s Facial Pain Series, he addresses facial pain of non-odontogenic origin and challenges us to get out of our comfort zone that compels us to search for dental answers for patients presenting with facial pain. It is not always the teeth! Consider the woman who has intermittent pain in her mandibular pre-molar for over a month. She’s in good health but is losing weight and has a dry cough. There is no caries and the tooth is vital. A mandibular block does not stop the pain. Next steps? What about the patient with dyspnea that reports pain radiating from maxilla that shoots to the eye?
In this first lecture of the series, Jeff reviews facial pain that can be referred from the chest or neck region and facial pain that may result from systemic disease. While cardiac pain is one of the usual suspects, this discussion includes the mechanisms of liver and lung cancer, lymphatic disease, suboccipital and cervical pathologies, diabetes, and they can first appear as tooth-related problems. Our aging patient population will continue to challenge our diagnostic skills as more and more may have systemic problems are first manifested in the facial area. Are you prepared to make these diagnoses?
There is a test over Lecture #1 that must be successfully completed to receive 1 hour of Continuing Dental Education Credit. There are two remaining lectures in the Series on Facial Pain Not Caused by Teeth. A test to verify successful completion must be completed at the end of each section.in order to receive Continuing Dental Education Credit for that Lecture.
