This section is designed to discuss soft tissue injuries such as contusions, abrasions, lacerations, puncture wounds and avulsion. Treatments of these injuries will be addressed considering the patient’s ability to heal, management of the wound, suture technique and wound preparation. Also addressed will be burns. Methods of treatment including appliances and splints will be included in this lecture. Prevention of trauma will be discussed including the need to educate dental professionals, health care providers, and athletic personnel regarding these injuries. The types of mouth guards available and the recommendations from the Academy of Sports Dentistry will be reviewed. A discussion of the rational for having a “Trauma Kit” in the dental office is presented as well as its contents and use. There will be a test at the end of this lecture to assure successful completion of this course.
